Cameron Roberts joined the mortgage industry last month, having previously owned a party and event hire business for a decade.
His co-principal at the Geelong business is Murray Hyde, who formerly sold mortgages for ANZ.
Mr Roberts toldThe Adviserthat he was delighted mortgage repayment calculator to have written his first loan last week after opening the Aussie Home Loans franchise in mid-January.
“The fact that it was my nephew added to the feeling. He’s a young bloke with a girlfriend, it’s their first home and they’d had some dramas with another broker six to eight months ago, so it wasn’t the easiest one to get approved,” he said.
Mr Roberts said Mr Hyde had suggested starting the franchise. Mr Roberts moved from Colac to Geelong in late 2013, at about the same time that home loan calculator his old friend left ANZ, so going into business was a logical step for both men.
“Going into a business where I don’t have that prior knowledge is a bit daunting, but having a partner who knows it back to front, I’ve got someone sitting next to me teaching,” he said.
Mr Roberts toldThe Adviserthat the pair had joined Aussie for the long term. Both are in their early forties and if all goes to plan, this will be their last job, he added.
“It would be nice to build up to a point where we have a receptionist at the front. It would be nice if we could employ one or two other loan writers,” he said.
“We’re looking at a 10- or 15-year business that hopefully is a great asset [so] that we can perhaps take a back seat to the loan writing itself and work it up to a point where it’s saleable.”
